Who is affected?
Apple has identified a problem with a limited number of 2, 3, 4, and 6 GB SCSI hard drives in some Power Macintosh and Performa configurations. These drives may experience a problem waking up after the machines have been set to sleep mode.
The drives affected are Quantum Fireball ST units with firmware revisions other than "0F0J". To determine if your drive is one of these, do the following:
- Using SCSI Probe or the Apple System Profiler distributed with System 7.6 and above, check the firmware version in your disk drive. In SCSI Probe, the version appears in the rightmost column of the display; in Apple System Profiler, select "Device Information" from the "Select" menu and look at the "Revision" field. If the version is not "OFOJ", you need to update your drive's firmware.
NOTE: If the drive was not pre-installed in your computer by Apple, please refer to the Quantum Firmware Bug page.
What can you do about it?
If you are having problems with Sleeper or Energy Saver failing to wake your disk drive and you have an Apple-installed Fireball ST drive, follow the procedure outlined below. Note that if you need to download the software named in each step, just click on the appropriate link.
- Go to Apple's Firmware Utilities section on their ftp server, and download the 2/3/4/6 GB Firmware Utility. You may also want to read the information bulletin on the server, as well.
- Once you download the 2/3/4/6 GB Firmware Utility, you need to make a floppy disk from the disk image that Apple supplies. To do this, you must use Disk Copy 6.1.3. Double click Disk Copy, choose "Make a Floppy..." from the "Utilities" menu, and select the disk image you downloaded. You cannot double-click on the disk image file itself, since Disk Copy will just mount it on the desktop, rather than creating a floppy disk.
- Once you've made the floppy, shut down your Mac, insert the disk in your floppy drive and power your Mac back up to boot from it. Once you get to the desktop, double-click on the floppy, then double-click the firware upate application and follow the on-screen instructions.
