Version 4.0:

Hotkeys for favorites and option-arrow keys now work when you are typing into the Spotlight keyword window.
The Get Info window can no longer come up with its title bar hidden behind the menu bar.
If the Default Folder X toolbar is off the right side of the screen, it will now be put on the left side of the file dialog instead.
Turning on "Create aliases" in the Advanced settings will initially cause Default Folder X to merge any existing aliases with its preferences, ensuring that you don't lose any Favorites you've already set up.
The control-up/down arrow shortcut for switching between Finder windows conflicts with the standard hotkeys for Spaces in Leopard. Default Folder X now uses option-shift-up/down arrow instead.
Fixed a bug that resulted in Spotlight comments not being saved when using a Save As dialog in a Carbon application under Leopard to replace an existing file.
Changed the Spotlight recent comment menu to remember the same number of items that the recent folder menu does. It previously just remembered the 10 most recently saved comments.
Mail.app no longer creates two messages instead of one when a file is dragged onto its icon in the Dock.
Modified the startup and patching procedures so that they don't bog down the system when other applications don't respond immediately or when Default Folder X doesn't have permission to talk to them (such as backup or utility programs that run with root privileges).
When running on a non-English system or displaying items on a file server, Default Folder X now sorts its hierarchical menus alphabetically rather than relying on the system to return items in the right order (which it didn't for localized application and folder names, and for files and folders on Windows NT / XP file servers).
The installer no longer asks for your administrator password to delete old copies of Default Folder X when you install for all users.
Keyboard handling and autocompletion are automatically disabled in the Spotlight comment window if Japanese is the current language. This avoids problems with the Kotoeri input method.
Renaming the active folder set in the preference pane now works correctly.

Version 3.0.6:

Fixed crashes that could occur during the entry of Spotlight keywords.
Spotlight keyword completion now preserves the case of the letters you type, rather than making the case match that of the last matching keyword you entered.
Worked around a bug which would disable Japanese Kotoeri input in the Spotlight keyword dialog.
Corrected a problem that caused some messages to display in English instead of Japanese on Japanese systems.
A conflict with Menufela has been resolved. Default Folder X's toolbar and Spotlight keyword window now display correctly even when Menufela is hiding the menu bar.
Nothing in the Default Folder X "Extras" folder has changed since the last release.

Version 3.0.5:

Spotlight keywords now auto-complete as you type.
Default Folder X is compatible with the latest Mac OS 10.5 Leopard seed.
Modal dialogs and alerts displayed by Default Folder X could interfere with the password prompt when waking a computer from sleep. This has been fixed.
Rebound behavior is now more consistent between Cocoa and Carbon applications.
Corrected a problem with iDVD 6 not being able to find its theme templates.
A hidden option is available to disable the "Are you sure you want to quit?" warning when quitting Default Folder X. Command-option-click on the Settings button to access this option.
Spotlight comments are read and written correctly for files on server disks that have the same name as a local disk.
Filenames longer than 255 characters in a Save As dialog could cause Default Folder X to crash. This has been fixed.

Version 3.0.4:

Unmodified function keys could not be used as hotkeys. This has been fixed.
The Default Folder X toolbar now hides while you resize a file dialog.
Toolbar hiding/showing now works correctly when the Finder Click feature is turned off.
Default Folder X now correctly remembers the folder that contains an item after it is opened by spotlight.
Fixed a bug where Fetch would display an error message when you click on the path menu

Corrected a problem that could cause Default Folder to be inaccessible to non-admin users running Panther.
Spotlight comments could not be saved in Cocoa applications when a file had a name that contained the '/' character. This has been fixed.
Folder sync (in the advanced preferences) is now turned off by default.

Version 3.0.3:

Compatible with pre-release versions of Mac OS 10.5 ("Leopard").
Displaying the parent folders at the bottom of hierarchical menus is now an option in the settings.
Added an option in the Spotlight comment box in Save As dialogs to re-use the same comment on subsequent saves.
Default Folder X can skip the "are you sure?" warnings if you hold down the option key while using the "Move To Trash" command. There is now a switch in the Advanced tab of the settings to turn this feature on and off.
Added an option to disable previews in Open dialogs. Command-option-click on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane to turn it on.
Added fade-in effect for the toolbar and Spotlight comment windows. Fading is only used if your Mac supports Quartz Extreme.
The toolbar now hides itself when an Open or Save dialog is dragged, so it no longer looks like it's "chasing" the dialog.
Spotlight comments added to new files are appended to existing comments rather than replacing them. This preserves URLs and other information that an application may automatically add to new files itself.
You can now add multiple folders at once when adding Favorites in System Preferences.
Improved stability and speed in Carbon applications.
Fixed a problem that could cause Default Folder X to hang while it was building a hierarchical menu for a folder that contained a damaged alias.
Corrected a bug that would cause a beep and an error message in some applications when the "current document folder" option was enabled.

Finder windows containing search results are not clickable, since the files shown in the window don't all have same location.

Eliminated a rare crash that occurred when clicking on the path menu in Carbon applications.
Fixed a problem that resulted in Default Folder X not being able to switch to some folders in Open and Save dialogs.

Corrected a bug that caused hotkeys for Favorites to get scrambled when opening a Default Folder X preference file from a PowerPC machine on an Intel-powered Macintosh.
Found and fixed a memory leak that would cause DFX to use excessive amounts of memory after it had been running for a long time.
Found and fixed a bug that could result in crashes in Adobe CS2 applications, corruption of preference files, and general instability, especially on Intel-based Macs.

Version 3.0.2:

Corrected a bug in which command keys and hotkeys in Open and Save dialogs would not work within PowerPC applications running on Intel-based Macintoshes.

Version 3.0.1:

A bug that caused crashes in Carbon applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, GraphicConverter, and others has been fixed. This crash occurred on dual- and quad-processor PowerMacs when opening files in folders that contained many items (usually more than 1000).
Fixed the modifier key settings for Finder-click. They were not working in 3.0.
You can now drag the parent window of a Save As sheet to move the Save dialog.
Fixed a bug that would cause error messages to appear in the console when the Spotlight comment window was hidden.
Temporary folders with names like "Print.1423.1" are no longer added to the Recent Folders menu.
Fixed a bug that would cause the Finder to crash when creating a folder using the MoveItemsX contextual menu.
Corrected Spotlight comment handling so it works correctly with accented and non-Roman characters in file and folder names.
Default Folder X will now correctly read registration information out of a preference file in /Library/Preferences/.
Added the expert option "ReboundWhenChoosingFolders" to do rebound even when an application allows you to choose folders. This benefits users of Fetch, in particular. Option-click on the Settings button to access the option.
Text now wraps correctly in the spotlight comment window.
An expert option is available to reduce the font size in Default Folder X's menus. Option-click on the Settings button to access it.
When you turn off gray window outlines in the Open & Save tab of the settings, the gray-desktop effect is now also turned off.
Eliminated "NSAutoreleaseNoPool" warnings in Terminal when running a Python script.
Default Folder X now supports versions of Mac OS 10.3 prior to 10.3.9.

Version 3.0:

Default Folder X is now a Universal Binary supporting both Intel and PowerPC based Macintoshes.
You can add Spotlight comments to a file while saving it in a Save dialog, rather than having to wait and switch to the Finder to add comments afterwards.
Default Folder X's Get Info window now allows you to edit Spotlight comments within Open and Save dialogs.
Two additional AppleScript commands, SetDefaultFolder and GetDefaultFolder, have been added to Default Folder X. With them, you can programatically control the initial folder shown in the Open and Save dialogs of any application.
"Upside-down path" menus are now at the bottom of all hierarchical menus. They let you go up to the enclosing folders of a folder while traversing the file system hierarchy, as well as easily see where a folder is on your hard disk.
You can create .zip archives from within Open and Save dialogs.
The width of the Name and Date columns are now remembererd in the list view of Open and Save dialogs. Without this fix, a bug in Mac OS X causes them to reset themselves every time you use a new Open or Save dialog in a Carbon application.
The "Finder-click" feature has been enhanced to catch clicks on the Desktop. If there is no Finder window where you click, Default Folder X will switch the file dialog listing to show the Desktop instead. This option is on by default, but can be turned off in Default Folder X's preferences.
Default Folder X now works correctly in Adobe Illustrator 10.
Graphic effects have been improved and are more intelligent. If Quartz Extreme is not available, the "fade in" of the Finder-click shadows will be disabled.
Finder-click shadows no longer appear and disappear as you press the command, option, or shift keys. In order to switch away from an application while leaving its file dialog on-screen, use the Dock or command-tab.
Apple Pro applications now show a hierarchical path menu at the top of Open and Save dialogs as they should when Default Folder X is running.
Corrected a bug in the Rename command that would not allow renaming a file by only changing case.
Corrected errors that could cause Default Folder X to use a lot of CPU time when trying to connect to applications after they first launch.
Numerous performance issues and bugs have been addressed.
Nothing in the Default Folder X "Extras" folder has changed since the last release.

Version 2.0.4:

Reintroduced the "Save dialogs automatically default to the current document's folder" feature with modifications to handle Microsoft Word's temporary files. To turn on this option, go to the Advanced settings pane in the Default Folder X preferences.
The "Click in a Finder Window" feature now correctly displays folder names in non-roman languages such as Japanese and Cyrillic.
Synchronizing Recent Folders and Favorites with aliases in HOME/Library/Recent Folders/ and HOME/Library/Favorites/ is now turned off by default. This improves performance significantly if you are using an iDisk or other slow file server. If you want to turn this feature back on, you can do so in the Advanced tab of the settings.
A number of performance improvements have been made, speeding the construction of Default Folder X's hierarchical menus, making Open and Save dialogs more responsive, and reducing or eliminating the appearance of the "spinning beachball" when accessing iDisks.
Choosing "make this folder the default" when an application didn't already have a default folder assigned to it would correctly create a new default folder entry for that application, but would also change the folder for the "All other applications" entry. This has been fixed.
OD4Contact has been added as a built-in entry in the exceptions list at the developer's request
A bug which caused Default Folder X to try to load its patches into an application twice has been fixed. This eliminates situations where Default Folder X was causing other applications to crash when they were launched.
A bug which caused Default Folder X to crash or fail to start during login has been fixed.

Version 2.0.3:

Resolved a bug that could cause the Finder to repeatedly crash or other Carbon applications like BBEdit to crash after installing the QuickTime 7.0.2 update.
Corrected a bug that prevented Default Folder X from working correctly when running under Jaguar (Mac OS 10.2).
Fixed a problem with the Default Folder X preference pane failing when a user's login item list was in an inconsistent state. This could result in Default Folder X's preference file becoming damaged, an inability to select Default Folder X in System Preferences, or general instability.

Version 2.0.2:

Added support for QuicKeys, Trans Lucy, and iClock.
Corrected a bug in which Default Folder X would delete aliases to application packages in the Favorites folder.
Fixed a problem that could cause applications to occasionally hang when launched (endless spinning beachball).
If an Open dialog is being used to select a folder, Default Folder X will not try to rebound, since that might select a folder within that folder.
Corrected a bug that could cause Safari, System Preferences, and other Cocoa applications to crash after applying updates to Mac OS 10.4.
Fixed a problem with the display of long menus that could cause Default Folder X to quit unexpectedly.
Corrected errors in the feature that synchronizes Default Folder X's preferences with the Recent Folders and Favorites folders.
Typing text in the search field in the Open and Save dialogs of Cocoa applications no longer causes the path menu to overlap the search field.
Fixed crashes in VPN Tracker and VNCViewer.
Corrected problems with resolving some alias files.

Version 2.0.1:

Fixed a bug that caused Save As dialogs to cancel themselves when running under Mac OS 10.2.
The automatic document detection in Save As dialogs, which was introduced in version 2.0, was a little too efficient at jumping back to the folder containing the original file. In many cases this behavior is undesirable, like when exporting a file, saving a PDF, or when the application is prompting you to save a temporary file. The feature has been removed until we can make it more intelligent.

Version 2.0:

Compatible with Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger".
Added automated checking for updates.
Preference loading and saving has been revamped to reduce the incidence of corrupted preference files.
When you choose Save As, Default Folder X will try to determine the file associated with the frontmost window, and if it can, will make the Save dialog initially show the folder containing that file.
When you have Default Folder X open a folder in the Finder, you now have the option of choosing to dismiss the current Open or Save dialog and switch to the Finder immediately, or to stay in the file dialog and just have the window open in the background for later use.
Added cmd-, as a shortcut for opening Default Folder X's preferences from an Open or Save dialog.
In the previous version of Default Folder X, if you selected an alias and used "Move to Trash", it would move the original file or folder, not the alias, to the Trash. This has been fixed.
Default Folder X now correctly uses the localized names for standard folders such as Library, Documents, System, etc.
Fixed the "Open any file by holding down the option key" feature so that it works correctly in Cocoa applications.
Corrected a bug that would result in the Default Folder X toolbar failing to appear on occasion.

Version 1.9.7:

Default Folder X now remembers the sorting order in the Open and Save dialogs of Carbon applications. For example, if you sort by date in Microsoft Word's Open dialog, the next time you choose Open in Word, the list will be sorted by date rather than reverting to sort-by-name, as it normally does under Panther and Jaguar.
You can now use cmd-option-number shortcuts to switch between folder sets in Open and Save dialogs.
The Default Folder X toolbar now closes at the same time as the file dialog, rather than hanging around for a second.
The Move to Trash command was inadvertently removed from registered versions of Default Folder X 1.9.6. It's back again in 1.9.7.
Reproduced and fixed a bug that was causing aliases to be incorrectly deleted in the Recent Folders and Favorites folders.
Default Folder X's help now correctly opens in your default web browser, rather than in the default application for .html files.
Fixed a problem that resulted in a folder failing to open in the Finder when you selected an alias to an unmounted server from Default Folder X's hierarchical system menu.
Open and Save sheets are now correctly enhanced in FileBuddy 8.
The Move to Trash command now sends an AppleEvent to the Finder to throw away files and folders, rather than copying or moving the items itself. If the Path Finder is being used as a Finder replacement, the file is moved to the Trash programmatically instead.
The list of disks in Default Folder X's menus is now sorted alphabetically.
Keyboard traversal in Carbon applications now handles the right arrow key correctly in all cases.
Fixed a problem that caused the command key for the Open in Finder hotkey to be incorrect when Default Folder X first started up.
Mounting a disk can take several seconds if it involves accessing a server or iDisk to get to a favorite or recently used folder. There is now a "please wait" message displayed while this is done.
The title in the Default Folder X preference is now an image instead of text using the "Apple LiGothic" font. This should fix display problems on machines that don't have that font installed.
Click-to-copy-a-filename will no longer allow you to make filenames more than 31 characters long in old applications that don't support it.
Folder synchronization can now be turned off entirely by option-clicking on the Settings button in the Default Folder X preference pane.

Version 1.9.6:

Dragging a file onto the Default Folder X icon in the Dock now invokes Default Folder X's Get Info command.
Selecting a file from Default Folder X's menu in the menubar opens it in Mac OS 10.3.5, rather than just showing it in the Finder.
The Finder-Click feature no longer interferes with clicking in options and settings dialogs that pop up on top of a Save dialog.
The display of folders in Open and Save dialogs is much faster in Carbon applications, especially when the folders contain large numbers of files.
When you use the Move to Trash command on an alias, the alias, not the original file, is moved to the Trash.
Default Folder X no longer makes QuickTime Player's Open dialogs slower than they already are.
Synchronization of your Favorites folder with Default Folder X's preferences has been made smarter. It will no longer create multiple copies of an alias in the Favorites folder when it can't find the original item (this caused severe slow-downs on some users' machines).
The preference pane no longer interprets the caps lock key as the shift key when setting hotkeys.
When running under Jaguar, typing a file or folder name now correctly scrolls to that item when rebound is turned on.
Fixed a bug that prevented Default Folder X from enhancing the "Save as PDF" dialog when printing within Cocoa applications.
Corrected a problem that disabled Default Folder X's AppleScript support under Panther.
Corrected the server icons in the Computer submenu of Default Folder X's Dock menu.
Worked around errors in Syncrosoft License Manager that caused it to crash when Default Folder X was enabled.

Version 1.9.5:

Default Folder X now maintains a "Recent Folders" folder within your Library folder. This allows you to add a complete list of recently used folders to FruitMenu, MaxMenus, DragThing, the Dock, or any other application that can show a folder full of aliases.
The speed with which an Open or Save dialog comes up on the screen in Carbon applications has been greatly increased. Switching between folders in an Open or Save dialog is also significantly faster.
The Preferences command will now look for the Default Folder X preference pane in the Network domain as well as the user and local domains.
A minor conflict with SpellCatcher X has been fixed.
Rebounding to the last selected file now works correctly in Open dialogs in Adobe Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS, even when the folder shown in the file dialog has a large number of files.

Version 1.9.4:

Fix appearance and behavior of the path menu in Apple's Pro apps.
Corrected a bug that could cause Default Folder X to crash after the system menu displayed a hierarchical menu that was longer than the screen.
Fixed rebound so it works on non-roman systems.
Disk icons were not correctly displayed when hierarchical menus were turned off. This has been fixed.
Fixed a bug that could cause Default Folder X to repeatedly create new aliases in the Favorites folder for folders it couldn't find.
The file list now scrolls correctly when rebounding in list view.
Corrected a problem which caused the system-wide menu to stop responding if you control-clicked on it.

A change in Panther caused Default Folder X to delete aliases pointing to unmounted SMB servers. This has been fixed.
Changed "make this folder the default" to set the default folder only for the current application, even if that application was using the "all other applications" setting before.

Version 1.9.3:

You can now turn off click-to-copy in Panther's Save dialogs. You can also make click-to-copy require modifier keys so it doesn't change the filename in Save dialogs when you just click on a grayed out filename by accident.
Greatly increased the performance of Default Folder X's hierarchical menus. Building of submenus is now much more intelligent so selection will not get "stuck" while building menus for folders that contain many items or that reside on slow servers.
Corrected a bug in which Favorites with a '-' at the beginning of their names added separators to the menu rather than usable menu items if Default Folder X's hierarchical menus were turned off.
Fixed menu highlighting color in the Default Folder X menu bar menu so it respects the Graphite appearance.
Fixed reliability problems in Adobe InDesign.
Worked around a bug in Adobe Photoshop CS that could cause it to crash when Default Folder X was running under Mac OS 10.2 with Talking Alerts turned on in the system's Speech preferences.
Fixed a bug that caused the path menus in Open and Save dialogs to be disabled in Fireworks MX 2004.
Resolved a bug that caused PowerPoint to complain that it was "having problems with getting input from the user."
Added cmd-U and cmd-opt-A as shortcuts in the Favorites menu in the Japanese version.
Corrected the registration code check so it ignores trailing tabs and carriage returns.
Fixed DFX icon so it's silver to match Panther's Finder toolbar icons.

Version 1.9.2:

Added a new "DFX" script that can pop up Default Folder X's menu from the Finder toolbar. See the "Extras" folder for details.
The Home and Desktop menu items in the Computer submenu are now hierarchical.
Improved performance when building hierarchical menus.
Aliases in the Favorites folder that pointed to unmounted disks crashed Default Folder X. This has been fixed.
Corrected a problem that caused Save As dialogs to crash in OmniGroup applications (OmniWeb, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner) and in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
Hierarchical menus now list the "display names" of files, rather than their true names, so files with hidden extensions (including ".app") will no longer have extensions in Default Folder X's menus.
Keyboard navigation, including the right arrow key, has been fixed in Carbon applications.
Hierarchical menus did not appear in the path menu of Save dialogs when the file listing was "rolled up". This has been fixed.
Rebound was not working correctly in some Cocoa file dialogs.
Worked around a bug in the Panther Finder, which reports that it has no windows open whenever it is hidden. The Finder Windows menu should now list the correct windows even when you hide the Finder.
Fixed a problem that could make Default Folder X fail to enhance some Cocoa applications.
Using Default Folder X's "Move to Trash" command on a disk now ejects the disk.
Fixed a code loading error that could cause some Carbon applications to crash.
When hierarchical menus were enabled, the root Home and Desktop menu items did not work.
When hierarchical menus were disabled, the path menu in Cocoa apps was disabled.
The Finder-click feature incorrectly "saw" windows that were minimized in the Dock.
Changed the command key that switches to the default folder back to cmd-U
Icons are now properly displayed in the Default Folder X toolbar when Default Folder X has been installed in a folder to which the user does not have write-access.
Default Folder X no longer shows volumes with zero size in its menus.
Removed the Computer->Computer menu item. There was no point in using this when your disks were listed right below the "Computer" menu item anyway.
The items in the Utility menu in Default Folder X's toolbar now update correctly when you switch to the Desktop.
For performance reasons, Default Folder X no longer shows icons in its hierarchical menus when displaying files on a server.
Reduced the size of the Default Folder X system menu icon slightly to fit better with Apple's menus.

Corrected a bug that caused submenus in the system menu to all contain "*" when running under Jaguar.

Fully compatible with Mac OS 10.3 "Panther".
Added an option to place a system-wide menu on the right side of the menu bar, providing access to both files and folders. Existing users must turn this on in the settings.
Menus in file dialogs and the system menu can now be hierarchical. Turn on the checkbox in the Menus tab of the Default Folder X settings in System Preferences to enable this.
Default Folder X now remembers all recently used folders: those that contain files double-clicked in the Finder or launched by another application and those that are visited in Open and Save dialogs.
Default Folder X 1.9 now requires Mac OS 10.2 or later.
Moving files to the trash works correctly on file server volumes.
Default Folder X will no longer generate a "Duplicate Hotkey" message when a Favorite has no key assigned to it.
Option up/down arrow now works in Open and Save dialogs when Caps Lock is on.

The Get Info command within the Default Folder X application itself (available when Default Folder X is displayed in the Dock) now allows selection of files and folders that are invisible or lie within packages.

The exception list in Default Folder X's settings did not display the list of applications properly. This has been fixed.

Fixed horizontal scrolling problems in file dialogs when viewing networked drives.

Version 1.6.7:

Default Folder X is now localized for German-speaking users, thanks to Eberhard Woentz.
Corrected a bug that could cause Default Folder X to hang if Path Finder was used as a complete replacement for the Finder, or if a version of Path Finder earlier than 2.1.0 was running.
Creating two folder sets with the same name would cause Default Folder X to crash. This has been fixed.

Keyboard traversal no longer hops around when you use the arrow keys to scroll through items in a column.
